Find Folk Arts Everywhere at Art Night Schenectady Friday September 19th from 5 pm to 8:30pm! View a map of activities here.

No matter where you visit during art night you are likely to find folk arts, traditional music from Ireland to India, Mexico to Ghana! Stop by the Electric City Barn’s Maker’s Market to buy handmade goods using traditional techniques.

How did folk arts take over the upcoming Art Night? Well, they have always been there, if you know where to look.

Folklore and folk arts are the essential ways of communicating heritage. Every group of people that shares a sense of identity shares folklore as part of that identity.  Identity can be defined by ethnicity, regional, by occupation and in many other ways. Learning a traditional art not only involves training in the skills and techniques of an artform, it also requires experience in the cultural aspects of knowledge, community values, etiquette, and worldview.

As you enjoy the upcoming Art Night, New York Folklore challenges you to answer the questions about yourself and the folk and traditional arts you encounter.

What folk groups do I belong to?

What are the traditions of my folk groups?

Who are the tradition bearers and knowledge holders and how did they learn?
