Jing Shuia
Artist's Craft: Tai Chi

Tai Chi philosophy, one of the pillars of Chinese culture, is intricately connected to the theories of the five elements and Yin and Yang. These principles permeate various aspects of Chinese culture, including medicine, martial arts, and traditional painting.

With decades of experience teaching Tai Chi for wellness, Jing Shuai has dedicated her life to studying and developing projects aimed at improving both physical and mental balance. Jing sees her commitment to education and the healthy development of teenagers as a living embodiment of Tai Chi’s teachings and her own social responsibility.

Through the ‘Culture, Community, and the Classroom’ program at Local Learning, Jing integrates fundamental Tai Chi concepts into school curriculums. For example, in a high school writing class, she teaches students about the concept of Yin and Yang and how to relax their bodies and minds. The students then reflect on these ideas through writing, exploring simple Tai Chi terminology. In art classes, students express their talents and creativity in various forms—whether through music, movement, words, or visual art.

Jing’s program, ‘Fan Your Talents,’ offers students and teachers a unique educational experience. This innovative program received the DEC project award from the New York State Council on the Arts administered by Arts Mid Hudson. Students decorate handmade silk fans, improvise performances using painted fans as props, and showcase their talents at an exhibition for parents and teachers. Through this artistic journey, students learn not only how to communicate with one another but also how to uncover their hidden talents in a fun and engaging way.
