Pan African Youth Orchestra: Information session and Workshops

July 8, 2023 @ 11:00 am - 12:30 pm EDT

Event Series Event Series (See All)

With sponsorship from New York Folklore and support from an Individual Artists’ Grant from the New York State Council on the Arts, Schenectady-based musician, Zorkie Nelson, is launching the first-ever Pan African Youth Orchestra for the Capital Region.

The Pan African Youth Orchestra for the Capital Region is a program involving youth ages 12-16.  Youth will learn to play the instruments of the Orchestra (bamboo flutes, drums, the balaphone (a traditional xylophone), the kora) while learning to play the rhythms of African music.  The orchestra will be led by Zorkie Nelson and other members of the original Pan African Orchestra in Ghana.

Four information and rehearsal sessions will be held in July at the Central Park Pavilion, on four Saturdays (July 8, 15, 22, 19), from 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Instruments will be provided.  For further information, or to RSVP your attendance, please contact New York Folklore at 518-346-7008 or via info@nyfolklore.org.
