Join us on July 11th at 5 pm to celebrate the most recent addition to Schenectady’s public art scene. The “Celebrate Caribbean Culture” by Rae Fraiser. Located at the entrance to Tropics Restaurant at 201 S Brandywine Ave.The mural is part of New York Folklore’s recent collaboration with Schenectady’s Caribbean Community.
Schenectady based artist Rae Fraiser (@ArtMoney) lead the creation of the mural with youth from the Schenectady Connects Program and New York Folklore Community Fieldworker, Divena Ramessar. The mural was conceptualized as part artistic endeavor, part training for the youth of the Schenectady Connects Program. They saw the mural through multiple phases of creation from finding the mural a home, filling out City Hall’s paperwork, getting community input, and finally, painting. Key community members, who brought the project to life include Philip Fields, Debbie and Shawn Budhraj, Lalita Ramnauth, George Ramson and Deryk Singh.
Funding for this project was provided through an “Our Town” grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, Schenectady Job Training Program (ie. Schenectady Connects), the New York State Council on the Arts, and the Golub Corporation.
