DESCRIPTION:New York Folklore presents a multi-part showcase of New York’s diverse folk music traditions. \nUse the code “Folklore” for free tickets! Purchase tickets here. \nThe concert will feature a short bilingual presentation by New York Folklore Fieldworker Nada Odeh\, about Arab art and culture. The concert will kick of with two performances\, by the Middle Eastern Music Ensemble at Cornell\, and Paul Hage and Hicham Mihab. \nThe Middle Eastern Music Ensemble at Cornell performs traditional music from the Arab World\, Turkey\, and Iran\, as well as related music from neighboring cultures. \nMajd Aldaye is the president and Qanun player\, Originally from Tartus\, Syria. With seven years of experience playing the Qanun in Syria\, Majd joined MEME@C in 2021 to share and celebrate his culture through music he is currently studying Computer Science at Cornell University. \nMohammad Labadi is the Vice President and Tablah (darbuka) player. Originally from Madaba\, Jordan. Currently a third-year undergraduate student majoring in Computer Science. Mohammad joined MEME during his first year after meeting Majd and the band at Club Fest. He took up playing the Tablah\, an instrument commonly used in social gatherings\, weddings\, and celebrations. \nNikolai Ruskin is the Music Director of the Middle Eastern Music Ensemble at Cornell\, which he co-founded in 2002 with Professor Martin Hatch. Nikolai performs and teaches on numerous instruments from traditional Arabic\, Turkish\, and Persian music \nPaul Joseph Hage and Hicham Mihab \nPaul Joseph Hage is an American Lebanese composer\, multi-instrumentalist\, and music producer. He performs multiple instruments at live shows and recordings playing Oud\, Guitar\, Darbuka\, Accordion\, and Arabic Keyboard. He incorporates traditional and modern music of the Middle East and Eastern Mediterranean\, as well as other musical elements. Paul’s main influence was his father Antoine Hage\, a virtuoso Oud player\, violinist\, and singer from Lebanon. Antoine worked with legendary artists of the Middle East\, Wadih Al Safi and Fairouz\, as well as Danny Thomas in the US from the 1950s-1960’s. \nHicham Mihab from Morocco is a talented multi-percussionist who plays the Tam-Tam\, Darbuka\, Cajon\, and Djembe. He is influenced by music of the Middle/Near East\, North Africa\, and Spain.

Get tickets here. \nTechung is an accomplished Tibetan folk and freedom singer/songwriter\, and a masterful multi-instrumentalist who hails from the vibrant town of Dharamshala\, India and presently resides in New York. He is a past recipient of the New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in Folk and Traditional Arts. In addition to singing\, Techung will play the\, Dranyen (Lute) Lingbu (flute) and Piwang (Fiddle). He will be accompanied by\nTenzin W Methoktsang on the Dulcimer and Dranyen\, Tenzin Kalsang: vocals\, Piwang and Dranyen\, and Rinzing Wangyal on Guitar \nTechung creates music that navigates and weaves both the secular and sacred aspects of Tibetan culture\, while capturing the soundscapes of Tibet and the profound longings of Tibetans who have endured decades of exile living in India. Techung has more than twelve recorded albums of Tibetan folk and contemporary music to his name. He shared the stage with numerous popular artists\, including the likes of Patti Smith\, Philip Glass\, U2 and the Beastie Boys. SUMMARY:Nikolayev – Chassidic Jewish Tunes from Ukraine
DESCRIPTION:Nikolayev is a performance of music composed by members of the Charitonow family\, who lived in the Russian Empire town of Nikolayev at the end of the 19th century. Avraham and his two sons\, Aharon and Sholom\, were renowned musicians\, as well as kosher butchers in their community in what is now known as Mykolaiv\, Ukraine. Their compositions from the late 19th and early 20th centuries continue to be actively sung and performed today in the Hasidic world. From soulful melodies to raucous dance tunes\, this concert will be a window into a living history\, with a world-class klezmer band \nYou can purchase tickets through The Linda’s website\, use the code NYFolklore for free tickets! \nLaura Melnicoff is a cellist based in Albany\, New York. Her performances have taken her to major stages and festivals in North America\, Europe\, and Israel\, including Carnegie Hall\, the Music Hall of Williamsburg\, Kyiv Summer Music Evenings\, Sababafest\, KlezKanada\, Yiddish New York\, and the Aspen Music Festival. Her work has been profiled in The New York Times\, the New York Jewish Week\, and the Forward. Before her recent move to the Capital Region\, Laura frequently worked with the National Yiddish Theater Folksbiene\, and was cello chair of the critically-acclaimed off-Broadway hit Fiddler on the Roof in Yiddish\, directed by Joel Grey. Laura is the recipient of the 2024 Folk Arts Grant by the New York State Council for the Arts. SUMMARY:Apprenticeship Showcase of North Indian Classical Music
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Suday July 21st for a free concert of North Indian Classical Music  \nIn 2024 Veena Chandra and Devesh Chrandra were awarded Apprenticeship grants from The New York  State Council on the Arts. This performance will feature Veena’s apprentices Vibhava Ranade and Anshu Chandra on the Sitar and Devesh’s apprentice on the tabla\, Rishabh Kumar.  \n Veena Chandra is an internationally renowned sitarist\, composer\, teacher and choreographer. She is the founder and director of the Dance and Music School of India in Latham\, NY (celebrating 34 years) where she teaches Indian classical music. She has been a faculty member at Skidmore College since 1990\, teaching sitar in the Music Department. Since\, 2014 she is also the Artist Associate in Sitar at Williams College (MA). Born in Dehra Doon\, the Valley of the Himalaya Mountain Range on November 30th\, 1944\, Veena was inspired to play music by her father.   \nDevesh Chandra has been learning the Tabla since the age of 3. He has learned Northern Indian Classical Music by accompanying his mother\, Veena Chandra. Devesh\, the youngest of six children\, grew up immersed in Indian music. His first spoken words were the syllables of tabla -Dha Dha Tita. Immersed in music at a young age\, Devesh is fortunate to have grown up surrounded by iconic figures of Indian Music. DESCRIPTION:New York Folklore presents a free\, multi-part showcase of New York’s diverse folk music traditions.\nNew York Folklore presenta una muestra gratuita de varias partes de las diversas tradiciones musicales folclóricas de Nueva York.\n\nTickets are available here. Use the code “NYFolklore” for free tickets\n \n\nLos Quisqueyanos is a traditional Merengue Conjunto or Ensemble based in Peekskill\, NY.  They perform Perico Ripiao or Merengue Típico\, a folk musical genre from the Dominican Republic.  The group is formed by Juan Gabriel Alvarez on Tambora\, Carlos Rodriguez on Guira\, Martin Jimenez on Marimbula and Bienvenido Caro on Accordion. The members of Los Quisqueyanos were born into the tradition of Merengue\,  learning to play from their families and communities. Los Quisqueyanos was formed in Peekskill and today they continue this rich musical tradition in New York . The group performs in social gatherings\, celebrations and cultural events in the community.  Perico Ripiao or Merengue Típico is the oldest style of merengue and is still performed today in the Dominican Republic and the United States). Perico Ripiao originated in the countryside of the Dominican Republic in the 1850s.Instruments common to Perico Ripiao are the güira (metal scraper)\, tambora (double headed drum)\, and a stringed instrument like the guitar or tres. Stringed instruments have been replaced with two-row diatonic button accordions when Germans began to travel to the island in the 1880s as part of the tobacco trade. Later\, the marímbula (which produces a bass sound using plucked metal plates) was added to fill out the sound. \n\nLos Quisqueyanos es una agrupación o Conjunto de Merengue Tradicional basado en la ciudad de Peekskill\, NY. El grupo interpreta Perico Ripiao\, un género musical folclórico de la Republic Dominicana. La agrupación esta integrada por Juan Gabriel Alvarez en Tambora\, Carlos Rodriguez en Guira\, Martin Gimenez en Marimbula y Bienvenido Caro en Acordeón. \nLos integrantes de Los Quisqueyanos nacieron en esta tradición musical y aprendieron a tocar en contacto con su familia y la comunidad. The musicians draw on their varied heritages (Mexican\, Cuban\, Venezuelan and Puerto Rican) to create Pulso De Barro. Members play Jarana and Leona (stringed instruments)\, quijada\, cajon\, maracas\, and marimba (percussive instruments)\, dance on the Tarima (percussive platform) and sing folk and original compositions called Versadas. SUMMARY:New York Folklore Presents: Jewish Folk Music
DESCRIPTION:New York Folklore presents a free\, three-part showcase of the Capital Region’s diverse folk music traditions. This event will feature an extended 20-minute intermission. Use the code “Folklore” for free tickets \nThe Kleiner Klezmer Orchestra was formed in the late 1980s when a local Rabbi connected the musicians\, today they are made up of David Bates (accordion) Dave Ray (violin)\, Dave Lambert (clarinet)\, Steve Lambert (trumpet). and Bailey Quinn (vocalist). The formation of the group was highly influenced by the Klezmer revival of the 20th century. Klezmer incorporates Yiddish folk music\, folk dance tunes\, and “folklorized” music of Yiddish theater. They often play at Jewish community events around the Capital Region. The group’s repertoire is a result of the transcription of 78s and the collection and research of historic arrangements by the band. \nJoshua Sussman is an Albany-based violinist. He has played the violin since he was five years old. In addition to formal musical training at Hartt School\, Joshua is a well-respected scholar and player of Chassidic folk tunes that he learned through participation in weekly gatherings called fabrengans (Chassidic celebratory gatherings)\, while attending yeshiva (Rabbinical college). SUMMARY:New York Folklore Presents: Sounds and Dance of Latin America and the Caribbean
DESCRIPTION:New York Folklore presents a free\, three-part showcase of the Capital Region’s diverse folk music traditions. Today’s performers are frequent collaborators\, and we are excited to bring them together at The Linda. \nTickets are available here. Use the code “Folklore” for free tickets. \nArtPartners/Tsehaya & Company\, Inc. founded for the purposes of the advancement and preservation of cultural arts. A community-based dance company composed of performers\, musicians and support staff focusing on the enhancement of cultural arts in the Capital Region. This organization seeks to afford the community an opportunity to become familiar with the multi-cultural aspects of theatrical dance and music through alternative programs. Their “Alternatives For Youth” Dance Program focuses on the arts as a deterrent to delinquent behavior and fostering performance stalls\, self-esteem building and higher learning through arts-in-education strategies and has provided dance programs for at-risk\, latch-key children of low-income single parent families\, residents of Arbor Hill and West Hill for more than 18 years. Young dancers have opportunities to demonstrate skills and observe high achievement through free community performances\, workshop productions and professional concerts. You can find more information at https://www.artpartnerstsehayacompany.org/ \nMundo Nuevo is al Capital Region ensemble dedicated to disseminating the rich and diverse musical tradition of Latin America and the Caribbean. The group regularly performs in festivals\, theatres and social activities in the region. Nuevo Mundo is formed by Jose Melendez (guitar and Vocals)\, Fernando Gomes (guitar and vocals) and Walter Ramos (flute\, percussion and vocals). Their repertoire includes genres such as Son\, Guaracha and Bossa\, traditional musical expressions of Latin America and the Caribbean. They interpret folk songs from Puerto Rico\, Cuba\, and Dominican Republic\, as well as Mexico\, Peru\, Argentina and Brazil. The ensemble also performs Nueva Cancion songs\, a protest\, pro-democracy folk genre that started in the 1960’s and was very influential in Latin America and the US. \nThis programming is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.

SUMMARY:New York Folklore Presents: Mixed Roots
DESCRIPTION:New York Folklore presents the first date in a free\, three-part showcase of the Capital Region’s diverse folk music traditions. \nUse code Folklore for free tickets. \nMixed Roots is a multi-part band which plays AfroBeat and Reggae under the leadership of drummer\, George. George grew up in Accra\, Ghana\, where he learned and practiced traditional African beats. Gideon\, the keyboarding specialist is originally from Nigeria. Guitarist Pete is local to upstate New York\, and the hand percussionist\, TT\, is from Ghana\, the bass lines you hear are from Jah Red\, who is local to the area. The horn section features locals Dave\, Catherine\, and Scott.
