SUMMARY:Design Your Own Hat! For teens ages 11-19.
DESCRIPTION:Participants will be creating their own personal unique designs on hats. This will be a guided workshop where participants will learn how to effectively prime and paint on hats for a long lasting design. \nWorkshop leader\, Rae’ Frasier is the creator and owner of Art Money (@artmon3y). A lifelong Schenectady Resident\, Rae’ is a clothing designer and mural artist.  Her work can be seen around Schenectady and elsewhere in the Capital District\, including pop-up fashion events and wall art. SUMMARY:La Cartonería Mexicana/ Mexican Cartonería: The Mexican Art of Aurelia Fernández Marure
DESCRIPTION:Mexican cartonería is an artform that expresses human imagination\, emotion\, and tradition using the simple materials of paper and paste to create a diverse array of subjects such as piñatas\, dolls\, Day of the Dead skeletons\, and fantastical animals called alebrijes. \nAurelia Fernández Marure\, was born in Morelos\, Mexico and raised in Cuernavaca\, in Mexico’s Morelos State. Aurelia is the daughter of community leaders and the granddaughter of revolution leaders. In her youth\, she learned traditional paper arts including piñatas\, flower papermaking\, paper mask\, large puppet\, and flowers. Aurelia emigrated with her family to the U.S.\, arriving in Yonkers in 1984.  \nShe is an award-winning artist who was honored as a 2004 inductee in City Lore’s “Peoples Hall of Fame” for Preserving Mexican Culture as part of  Mano a Mano: Mexican Culture without Borders.  Most recently (May – Sept 2023)\, her work was featured as part of City Lore’ exhibit\, “Parampara: Lines of Transmission in the Traditional Arts.” \nReconocimientos: 2018 Craftswoman of the Year the Mexican Music Awards 7th Yar. 2018 Proclamación\, “Premio Madre Teresa de Calcuta”. SUMMARY:Exhibit Reception for Hattitude!
DESCRIPTION:Join us on September 14th from 4:00 – 6:00 for a reception for “Hattitude! The Hats of Louise Hughes Rolling” with curator\, Vicie Rolling.  The daughter of the millener\, Louise Hughes Rolling\, Vicie will give a presentation on her mother and her mother’s work as a milliner.  The presentation will take place at 5:00.  Refreshments will be served. \nVicie Rollling is a storyteller with “Framing the Past Storytelling.”  She says of her work\, “With historical research\, I craft dialogue and narratives of their lives. I sometimes express stories in poetry\, sometimes as monologue. I love to try to take an audience with me\, back to a specific period with the happenings of the day acknowledged for context. Then I paint pictures with words\, music\, and often costumes and props that allow the audience to lean into that reality.” \nAn RSVP is suggested but not required. \n

DESCRIPTION:Perhaps they hearken back to a time of sartorial elegance. “We dress for dinner\,” meant that effort was required when tending to one’s attire. In the past\, going out was about adding glamour and mystique from head to toe. Sometimes adding a cute little wisp to adorn one’s head was done with a fascinator while other times\, a cocktail hat was a perfect choice. \nIn this fun workshop by the owner and designer of “Millinary Treasures\,” participants will construct their own fascinator\, the “Golden Poof”.  This workshop is limited to 10 individuals.
