Art Night Schenectady is a one-night pop-up art gallery and music celebration on the 3rd Friday of every month displayed across a dozen venues across Downtown Schenectady. \nMiwa Ginen- Nou se Lwa (Mirror of Ginen: We are the Spirits)\, an exhibit by Aisha Jean-Charles\, is a series of devotional altar pieces that hold and radiate the presence of the Lwa\, powerful Haitian spirits. This folk art form serves not just as decoration but as energetic vessels that ground ceremonies\, honor ancestors\, and invite the Lwa to inhabit the space. \nAbout the Artist: \nAisha Jean-Charles is a Haitian-born multidisciplinary artist whose work reflects the rich spiritual and cultural traditions of her heritage. Raised in New York after emigrating from Haiti at the age of nine\, Aisha is a proud Pitit Ginen (child of Ginen)\, deeply rooted in Haitian Vodou folk practices.  In Vodou folk tradition artistic abilities are believed to be ancestral gifts\, talents passed down through blood and spirit to honor and uplift Ginen\, the spiritual place where the ancestors and Lwa reside. \nThe exhibit can viewed whenever the New York Folklore Shop and Gallery are open. Stop by the New York Folklore Gallery to view the exhibit! \nAbout Victoria: \nMy work is an abstract interpretation of the traditional quilt-making techniques I learned from my Grandmothers. The painstaking handwork of my forebears never far from my mind as I work\, I am committed to revealing the inextricable connection between the traditions of Women’s Work and fine art. \nI am passionate about equitable access to art and subverting the gate-keeping that is so pervasive in the art world. I believe in alternative economies and want my work to be accessible to all. I offer an ongoing series of textile sketches with a pay-what-you-can model on Instagram and have recently shifted to a sliding scale pricing model for all of my work. I am always looking for ways to increase my role in the solidarity economy. \nGravely concerned about the climate crisis and the harmful role the textile industry plays in it\, I use only secondhand\, repurposed\, or vintage textiles in my work. DESCRIPTION:No Matter Eastern or Western: Abstract Expressionism of Lunar Five Elements \nThis exhibit by Xiaoping Xu is based around a large-scale fusion painting representing the five lunar elements; wood\, fire\, earth\, metal and water. The piece brings together Western Abstract Expressionism and Traditional Chinese Visual Arts. Traditional arts included are Chinese calligraphy and Chinese seal carving. In additional to the flagship piece\, a variety of artworks by Xiaoping will be featured. \nAn opening reception will be held on November 21st at Schenectady Art Night from 5pm to 8:30pm. Stop by the New York Folklore Gallery to view the exhibit\, and enjoy traditional Chinese music by Xiaoping. Light refreshments will be served. \nRelated Programming: \n\nBrush Painting Workshop  December 13 @ 4:00 pm $20 – $25\nBa Duan Jin (Eight Brocades) Workshop December 14 @ 2:00 pm Free\n\nXiaoping learned calligraphy\, like all students\, at school in China. She continued to practice calligraphy during college won first prize for a calligraphy competition at Jianghan University in Wuhan. Her teacher\, seeing her talent\, suggested she begin brush painting. At this time\, she also began to self – study seal carving at age 20 using soap. After moving to America\, Xiaoping became focused on working\, she went back to school and earned a B.S.in Computer Science (1991) from Wayne State University. While working in Albany\, starting in 1993\, Xiaoping taught Tai Chi\, Qi Gong\, and Chinese dance at a variety of fitness centers and the Capital Region’s Chinese Community Center. During the COVID-19 pandemic Xiaoping began to devote even more time to her artwork. She began to work in mediums\, such as clothing and stone instead of soap seals. Additionally\, she enjoys singing\, gardening and is currently learning the traditional Chinese instrument\, Guqin. \nThe exhibit can viewed whenever the New York Folklore Shop and Gallery are open. DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, November 16th at 11 am Anping will present an introduction to traditional Chinese brush painting. Topics will include: history\, philosophy\, composition\, elements\, and popular subjects. He will demonstrate how to use bush\, ink\, and paint and teach some basic ink wash techniques. SUMMARY:The Yellow Mountains (Huang Shan) of Anhui Province
DESCRIPTION:Zhong-Hua Lu is a recipient of an Individual Artist Grant from the New York State Council on the Arts. This grant funded the creation of a 1000-foot scroll based on the artist’s trip to the Yellow Mountains (Huang Shan) of Anhui Province in China. \nYou can read more about the artist here: https://nyfolklore.org/artist-spotlight-zhong-hua-lu/ \nThe Yellow Mountains are an extraordinary landscape for this art form because of the huge variation in form and weather conditions. Sometimes\, one mountain can appear to encompass all four seasons at once. There are 72 peaks with steep cliffs\, rivers of mist\, waterfalls\, and pines with long reaching boughs that survive harsh blizzards and cling through blizzards to the rocky mountainsides. There is a long tradition of Chinese painters traveling to the Yellow Mountains to paint this astounding  landscape from the Tang Dynasty to the Ming Dynasty\, and into the present. \nThe exhibit can be viewed whenever the New York Folklore Shop and Gallery are open. SUMMARY:Efthimios (Altin) Stoja to Demonstrate at Schenectady's Art Night
DESCRIPTION:New York Folklore will have an ongoing demonstration by Efthimios (Altin) Stoja\, outside of the New York Folklore gallery at 129 Jay Street. \nAltin trained in the Byzantine/ Macedonian style of iconography under master artist Tsuni Spilio in Nea Makri\, Greece\, before opening his own studio. He later moved to the U.S. to begin working with the St. Sophia Orthodox Church in Albany. \nHis iconography (in the Macedonian tradition – which shows movement and facial expressions) can be found within Albany-area Orthodox Churches. \nAltin has received Individual Artist grants from the New York State Council for the Arts for his public art\, which can be viewed at the Rao Pavilion of St. Mary’s Hospital\, Amsterdam\, and at St. Kateri Takawitha School on Union Street in Schenectady.  He has shown his work at the Albany Center Gallery and at the Martinez Gallery in Troy\, as well as at the Gallery of New York Folk Art. \nNew York Folklore will be offering slices of Birthday Cake\, as New York Folklore celebrates its 80th Anniversary this year.  On Saturday\, September 21st\, New York Folklore is hosting a free outdoor festival in Jay Square with music\, an artists’ marketplace\, and dancing.  And more Birthday Cake.
