SUMMARY:Cooking Up Community: Salvadoran Pupusas
DESCRIPTION:On May 24th at 6pm María Romero of Casa Latina will demonstrate Pupusas\, originally from El Salvador\, María has been a resident of Hudson for the last 20 years.  She started cooking and making pupusas (thick corn tortillas that can be stuffed with various fillings\, including various meats\, refried beans\, cheese\, and even squash flowers) from a little street stand in town.  Five years ago\, she opened Casa Latina\, which has become one of Hudson’s most loved places to eat. Cooking Up Community is part of New York Folklore’s ongoing project “What’s Cooking Capital District?” The project highlights food and foodways traditions found in the greater Capital Region of New York and is supported by HumanitiesNY and Berkshire Taconic Foundation.

SUMMARY:Cooking Up Community: Congolese Mikates
DESCRIPTION:On April 26th at 6 pm Pamela Badila will demonstrate Mikate\, a Congolese dessert\, also known as puff-puff in western Africa. These beignets come with mango sauce and mint leaves. Contrary to New Orleans beignets\, the Mikate are made with just flour and sugar and fried.   \nPamela is an artist\, dancer\, and folkteller. She\, along with her late husband Elombe Badila\, are cofounders of the Diata Diata International Folkloric Theatre. Badila has been a cultural pillar of Columbia County since relocating to the area in the late 1990s.\n \nThis program will happen in person\, in the Hudson Area Library Community Room. No registration is required. All are welcome. SUMMARY:Culture Community and the Classroom: A Fieldtrip to Hudson
DESCRIPTION:Occupational culture contributes to sense of place\, history\, and aesthetics. This 6-hour interactive\, hands-on workshop offers educators of all grade levels an opportunity to visit and practice documentation of vital local occupations and to connect their experiences to the classroom. Facilitators include folklorists and local traditional artists. Through ethnographic tools such as observation\, note taking\, interviewing\, sketching\, and photography\, participants will hone cultural research inquiry skills that students can apply across curricula to deepen knowledge of themselves\, their region\, their history. Expect a day of discovery\, collaboration\, and rejuvenation. \nThe workshop will include 6 CTLE hours of learning with instructors. All educators are welcome to register. Lunch will be provided.
