SUMMARY:Along the River: Teaching and Learning with Place Markers
DESCRIPTION:Haudenosaunee language and story have been missing from history books as well as from roadside place markers. Working with Seneca language expert and artist\, Bill Crouse (Seneca/Hawk Clan)\, New York Folklore has engaged in a place-marking project to mark places of significance to Indigenous populations in New York State. \nThrough collected narratives from Haudenosaunee communities\, educators will explore our state’s Indigenous history and gain a new understanding of significant sites within New York’s watersheds. Plan to spend six hours discovering tools and curricula for experiential learning from the perspective of place. \nActivities/Learning Objectives: \n• Explore ideas of “place” through cultural\, social\, and biophysical dimensions. \n• Practice using research methodologies including close observation\, field biology\, note taking\, sketching\, and mapping \n• Gain a deeper understanding of the values\, beliefs\, and traditions of the Haudenosaunee communities of New York State \n• Examine the ethical considerations of representing diverse cultures in a classroom \n• Investigate the presence and meaning of culture in our own lives\, families\, and communities\, including the school community \n• Connect Indigenous culture and place names to education standards \n• Adapt field-based learning skills for use in the classroom \nFacilitators: Local Learning (Mira Johnson)\, New York Folklore (Ellen McHale); Schoharie River Center (John McKeeby) and Seneca language expert\, William “Bill” Crouse. \nREGISTER \nThis workshop is offered in partnership with the Capital District Teachers’ Center and is supported by a grant from the Mohawk Basin River Watch program of the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation.

DESCRIPTION:The Culture\, Community and the Classroom Showcase is a culminating event that provides opportunities to highlight the exciting programs that resulted from teacher/artist pairings in the k-12 classroom.  In 2024\, Local Learning partnered with the Mid-Hudson Teachers Center and New York Folklore to provide workshops for artists and teachers to incorporate traditional arts learning into classrooms in the Mid-Hudson Valley. \n\nExperience important local art forms and learn what happened when educators included guest artists in their classrooms this fall.\nFind out what students learned.\nEnjoy artists’ sharing.\n\nCome explore the folk arts educational experiences that are a result of the 2024 Culture\, Community and the Classroom Workshops in New Paltz!  This professional development workshop was supported by the Mid-Hudson Teachers Center. The workshop resulted in eight in-classroom experiences for the Hudson Valley\, engaging more than eight folk artists and k-12 classroom pairings.  The traditional arts of the community\, and their applications within the school settings\, will be presented in a Showcase to take place on the campus of SUNY New Paltz.

CCC artists find the\nexperience fun and useful. SUMMARY:Folk Arts in Education Showcase and Concert
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Sunday April 28th for a concert of North Indian Classical Music and Ghanaian Drumming. \nOver the past year teaching artists Veena Chandra\, Devesh Chandra\, and Zorkie Nelson have worked collaboratively with the Schenectady School District to bring folk music into the classroom. The program will include an interview with the artists as they detail best practices and reflections on their work\, along with a concert by the Chandras and Zorkie Nelson. \nVeena Chandra is an internationally renowned sitarist\, composer\, teacher and choreographer. She is the founder and director of the Dance and Music School of India in Latham\, NY (celebrating 34 years) where she teaches Indian classical music. She has been a faculty member at Skidmore College since 1990\, teaching sitar in the Music Department. Since\, 2014 she is also the Artist Associate in Sitar at Williams College (MA). Born in Dehra Doon\, the Valley of the Himalaya Mountain Range on November 30th\, 1944\, Veena was inspired to play music by her father. Devesh Chandra has been learning the Tabla since the age of 3. He has learned Northern Indian Classical Music by accompanying his mother\, Veena Chandra. Devesh\, the youngest of six children\, grew up immersed in Indian music. His first spoken words were the syllables of tabla -Dha Dha Tita. Immersed in music at a young age\, Devesh is fortunate to have grown up surrounded by iconic figures of Indian Music. A film maker as well as a musician\, Devesh is on the music faculty of Williams College. You can read more about Veena and Devesh’s work in Schenectady here. \nZORKIE NELSON is a master percussionist\, traditional flute player and vocalist specializing in the Ga cultural tradition. Born into a family of musicians in the West African city of Accra\, Ghana\, Zorkie has studied music since the age of seven. His accomplishments include performing as a part of Wynton Marsalis’ “Congo Square Tour” in 2006\, and co-founding and conducting the Pan African Orchestra (PAO) in the 1990’s. \nJoining Zorkie Nelson on the stage for April 28th will be the visiting leader of the Pan African Youth Orchestra for Ghana\, Sweku Sekyema Kwakye\, as well as several school-aged youth who have been learning the rhythms and melodies throughout this school year. Nelson and Kwakye will present the structure and music of the Pan African Youth Orchestra and its unique role in furthering youth development in Schenectady. The Capital District Pan African Youth Orchestra is currently seeking members to learn the various instruments\, including flutes\, percussion\, and stringed instruments. DESCRIPTION:Occupational culture contributes to sense of place\, history\, and aesthetics. This 6-hour interactive\, hands-on workshop offers educators of all grade levels an opportunity to visit and practice documentation of vital local occupations and to connect their experiences to the classroom. Facilitators include folklorists and local traditional artists. SUMMARY:Culture\, Community and the Classroom: Teaching with Primary Sources
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, middle- and high-school educators will learn how to teach using primary sources drawn from their local community. Primary sources from ethnographic and folklife collections go beyond historical documents and include photographs\, recorded interviews\, artifacts\, recipes\, music\, maps\, and more. Although they do often reflect historical truth\, primary sources are valued as powerful reference points for understanding individual and community perspectives on memory\, meaning\, and identity. Participants will work with the Folklife Center’s Special Collections at Crandall Public Library and learn how to use oral histories and ethnographic materials to examine local occupational cultures surrounding farming and the Champlain Canal by comparing and contrasting life experiences\, voices\, and vantage points. Educators will discover how traditional arts and culture can be assets in their classroom\, engage with proven tools for student inquiry\, and learn with a cohort model that centers teachers’ expertise.\nThe afternoon workshop will include 3 CTLE hours of learning with instructors. All educators are welcome to register for the workshop\, but learning activities will target middle- and high-school educators.
