Perhaps one of the reasons for the ambivalence toward the outlaw hero, expressed by members of the greater society, can be found in the relationship between the needs of the individual and the requirements of the group. The smooth functioning of society is thought to be dependent to a great extent upon the maintenance of the norms of behavior, but "normal" individuals are not free to express overtly most of their own aggressive impulses or asocial tendencies generated in daily contact and interpersonal relations; this, however, is what the social malcontent, or the psychopathagressive, rebellious, asocialcan do. (from “(PC + CB) X SD (R + I + E) = HERO” by Michael Owen Jones)
