Watkins Glen, New York
The 2004 NYFS Field Trip took place October 29–30 in New Yorks Finger Lakes region. We explored the folklore of NASCAR at the Watkins Glen International Speedway, visited wineries carrying on family wine-making traditions brought from Europe, the area salt industry, and discovered the landscapes and traditional activities of the region.

ABOUT THE KEYNOTE SPEAKER
Mark Howell, Ph.D. is currently Academic Chair of the Communications Area at Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City, Michigan. He received his Ph.D. in American Culture Studies from Bowling Green State University with a focus on twentieth century American history and popular culture. His book, From Moonship to Madison Avenue: A Cultural History of the NASCAR Winston Cup Series was published in 1997 by the Popular Press (U. of Wisconsin) and won the Ray and Pat Browne National Book Award of the Popular Culture Association in 1998. This book was the first scholarly study of stock car racing and NASCARs growth and evolution into a mainstream professional sport. Currently he is working on a book for Syracuse University Press entitled A Family Tradition: The Racing Bodine Brothers from Chemung, New York.
