The New York Folklore Society hosted it 2001 Annual Conference in Fredonia, New York, in beautiful Chautauqua County on September 28-30.

New York’s frontier in the 19th and early 20th century was the location for major cultural innovation. It was the location of the first organized Grange in the United States, an organization made by and for the agricultural community. Religious movements such as Spiritualism got its start in Western New York, and the Chatauqua Institution has had a lasting effect on American politics, literature, arts, and language. The New York Folklore Society dedicated its 2001 conference to the spirit of innovation on the Niagara Frontier.

Conference attendees enjoyed:
  • A Supper and Square Dance at America’s First Grange, Fredonia #1
  • Panel discussions and presentations on
    • the Chautauqua Institution
    • regional folk culture
    • Western New York music and dance
  • Buffalo Concertina All-Stars’ polka and Polish music at the 1891 Fredonia Opera House
  • Walking tour and program at the Lily Dale Assembly—the world’s largest center for science, philosophy, and religion of Spiritualism

The New York Folklore Society’s programs are made possible in part with public funds from the Folk Arts Program of the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency.nysca_60px
